I saw you disappear like the smoke I exhaled from my cigarette

sixtyforty:

i believe very passionately in doing absolutely nothing for as long as you want or need without feeling guilty about it because capitalism sees free-time as its mortal enemy. the lack of free-time is the death of creativity, personal reflection, real sleep, and just sheer goddamn relaxation. capitalism realizes it must crush this in order to squeeze every last drop of cash and blood it can out of you before it discards your dried up and utterly spent husk onto the burning trash heap. do as much nothing as you can.

Happiness is not a permanent state. Happiness is not a thing we achieve. We do not find the secret to happiness and then everything is just great. Happiness comes in moments between sad moments and everyday ordinary moments. Happiness is there for you to notice and reach for and touch.

There are posted signs about calling the police, and not giving to panhandlers. But, when I see somebody standing on a strip by the road with a cardboard sign, I figure it's for a damn good reason. I saw a website suggest making a bag that you can keep in your car, with granola bars, bottled water, and hygienic products. Do you think that's a good idea?"

workingitinportland:

What! Who said call the police? They should be killed!

Look if you can afford it, give them money. If you only have a card and there’s a place to grab some food convenient, get them food and a drink, ask what they want first.

People don’t stand outside or on freeway off and on ramps because it’s easy. They just don’t. That’s the shoddiest most shameful lack of thinking ever and I’m not accusing you of it but if anyone ever says that in your hearin that person is either lazy or heartless and don’t fucking let them get away with that! People stand outside with signs because they are DESPERATE and don’t have other options. It’s often humiliating, and it’s usually uncomfortable: cold, hot, wet, people are rude, exhaust fumes, no way to stand, public bathrooms don’t want them and aren’t easily accessible…

Yes. If you can spare extra granola bars or products or money or food or even stop to talk and be kind for a minute please do that!

wipes are really useful, portable, and make up for lack of water access often. Energy bars, power bars, things that won’t go bad, &c but do always think of money, keep that in mind as an option. Allow people autonomy and choice bc so often no one trusts houseless people with money.

Understand and challenge your personal narrative. Narratives become choices and actions — which become your life.
